During the Great Depression, as families lost jobs and homes, many formed small communities known as “Hoovervilles.”

Built from found materials such as wood, tar paper, cardboard, tin, and even glass. These makeshift shelters were often constructed near rivers or lakes for access to water. Some were as simple as holes dug into the ground with a cover to keep out the rain. Others were surprisingly organized.

Muskegon had its own Hoovervilles, known as “The White City” and “Coney Island.” They were located near where the BC Cobb Plant stood, close to the lake for water and near the railroad tracks, where many rode the rails in search of work.
